This era demands us to take care of our health more than ever. It isn’t like age makes you weak. Age is just a number if you pay serious attention to your health you will be fit and strong even when you are 80.

To be healthy it is essential to eat well for improved energy levels, mental acuteness and strengthening immunity. Healthy diet allows you to have a positive outlook towards life being emotionally balanced.

Eating healthy is not about dieting. No matter what your age is, eating well is all about eating fresh and healthy foods and with loved ones.

Feed Both Mind and Body

No matter what eating habits you had previously, it is never too late to go healthy and improve the way you feel and think.

  • Nutritious food enhances immunity, fights toxins which make you sick, reduces risk of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, bone loss and keeps your weight in check!
  • Eating leafy veggies, nuts and fruits which are enriched with omega-3 fatty acids improve focus and reduce risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Green tea rich in antioxidants also enhances mental alertness and memory as you age.
  • Healthy and wholesome meals gives you not only energy but helps you in looking vibrant and results in mood and self-esteem booster.

A Healthy Diet

Eating healthy focuses on minimally processed whole food which body needs as you age and is closest to its natural form. Due to health factors and genetics bodies tend to respond differently to different foods so finding the right diet would take some testing.

  • Veggies: Go for dark leafy greens like kale, broccoli and spinach and colorful ones like squash and carrots. Consume 2-3 cups daily.
  • Fruits: Change the same old apple and banana and eat rich colored berries and melons and try to have 2-3 servings daily.
  • Grains: You need to choose whole grains over processed white flour for more fiber and nutrients.
  • Calcium: Maintenance of bone health is crucial as you age to prevent bone fractures and osteoporosis.  1200 mg of calcium is needed by older adults a day through milk, cheese or yogurt. Kale, tofu, broccoli and almonds are non-dairy sources of calcium.
  • Healthy Fats: As fat is dense in calories, consuming little goes a long way in making you feel fuller for longer but have saturated fats only .
  • Proteins: Those adults over the age of 50 who do not have diabetes or kidney diseases need 1 to 1.5 grams per kg of bodyweight. 0.5g of protein per lb. of body weight is sufficient. Eating enough high quality protein as you age, improves your mood, boosts resistance against anxiety, depression and stress.
  • Water: Aging adults are sometimes prone to dehydration as sense of thirst is not sharp sometimes, keep sipping water to avoid constipation, urinary tract infections etc.
  • Vitamins B & D: After 50, less gastric acid is produced by the stomach making it difficult to absorb. Vitamin B-12 is needed to keep nerves and blood healthy. 2.4 mcg is recommended.
The skin also becomes less efficient at producing vitamin D so take multivitamins if your sun exposure is limited.

Healthy Fats

For a healthy diet, rather than cutting fat entirely from diet, enjoy healthy fats and focus on consuming them so that your body is protected against disease and support your brain and mood function. Fats are also necessary for health.

Polyunsaturated Fats contain Omega-3 fatty acids which are found in fish like salmon, mackerel, sardines and herring. Other sources include walnut and flaxseed.

Monounsaturated Fats can be found in foods like avocados, olive oil, nuts which include pecans, hazelnuts and almonds. Pumpkin and sesame seeds are highly enriched too.

So follow a healthy diet and keep your mind and heart strong which will make you live healthily and longer!

Besides all these health facts you have to visit the general physician or nutritionist if you are more concerned about your daily health. There are few important things which may lead you to concern nutritionist instantly.
